A trio of good Samaritans tried in vain to save the driver of a car which crashed off a bridge and plunged into the Hatea River at the top of the Whangarei Falls yesterday.

The middle-aged man driving the car was pulled injured from his damaged vehicle, but died soon after.

Some onlookers suggested he may have had a heart attack before the crash as the vehicle had been swerving erratically on Ngunguru Rd.

Jacob Ngere, of Otangarei, was walking around Whangarei Falls Scenic Reserve at Tikipunga with his mates about 2.45pm when he heard a loud crunch as a green 4WD vehicle crashed into a tree, broke a protective barrier on the bridge and plummeted several metres into the river.

The car had come from Ngunguru, lost control and went over the edge of the bridge.

Mr Ngere, 20, said he ran over rocks to the car, which was submerged and lying on its side.

He saw the driver stretching both his arms out upwards while under the water.
