Building has started at Whangarei's first non-religious private school, Huanui College, with classes planned to  begin in February next year.

The school is located on 50 acres of farmland at Glenbervie on Ngunguru Rd and will initially start as a junior school from years 7 to 9. The college will then grow year-on-year until the initial year 9 students progress through to year 13.

Fees will cost between $10,000 and $11,500 per year and 70 students have already been interviewed.
