Matapouri Beach is safe for use this summer, despite  problems with controversial sand dune protection work that left the beach littered with poles and fence wire, the Whangarei District Council says.

Dune plants, including pingao and spinifex, were planted at Matapouri about two years ago to protect severely eroded cliffs threatening homes and land behind them.

However, a storm last year brought down the newly established dunes and a fence erected to prevent people from walking on to the dunes.
