...the district council is working to have the longdrop closed or moved

An illicit longdrop on Whangarei District Council land in Ngunguru is being shut down after it was found to be polluting the Ngunguru estuary.

The pollution was picked up during the Northland Regional Council’s regular summer monitoring of popular swimming spots.

Regional council environmental monitoring officer Sophie Tweddle says last summer the Ngunguru estuary site by the toilets was unsafe more than 40 percent of the time.

Because the site was 100 percent safe the previous year the regional and district councils decided to investigate, she says.
