Auckland boaties took two terrier dogs ashore at the Poor Knight Islands earlier this year. Picture/supplied

Two boaties have paid $500 each after taking terrier dogs ashore at the Poor Knight Islands.

The Department of Conservation says a member of the public reported the illegal landing to conservation authorities and has highlighted the community's lack of tolerance for those who breached laws at the world famous reserve.

The Auckland duo recently appeared in  Whangarei District Court after completing diversion, which included a $1000 payment to DoC which will  go  towards enhancing the conservation of the islands.

They were also ordered to write a letter of apology to the department.

To report illegal activity at the Islands call 0800 DOCHOT.

The  pair were spotted by another boatie anchored at the marine reserve  at Nursery Cove on Aorangi Island in January.

The concerned boatie  snapped photographs of the men, who rowed ashore and one of them took the two dogs on to the islands.
