A coroner has called for a ban on snow tyres fitted to imported Japanese cars after an inquest was told they contributed to the death of 52-year-old Northland man Iain Craig Connell.

Mr Connell lost control of his car on a wet road and he drowned after the car plunged into the Ngunguru river.

An experienced fatal crash analyst said if snow tyres - which are legal but known to provide less grip on a wet road - had not been on the rear of the Japanese import Nissan Avenir station wagon, the death could have been avoided.

Mr Connell, a chef, had been travelling towards Ngunguru on February 14 to help a friend in his new cafe, when he lost control of the car on a corner and careered into the river near Scow Landing.

Mr Connell's partner of three years Robbie Pim backed the coroner's call to ban the tyres, describing them as "killers".
