Far North businesses batten down the hatches during the storm, but the worst of it seems to have passed

The extreme conditions have forced Far North businesses to batten down the hatches.

Salt Air Cafe in Ngunguru has had windows smashed, doors blown off and its veranda dislodged.

Owner John Sands says fortunately the damage has been done before customers arrived.

He says staff are working hard to clean up glass but with gale-force winds it is not safe to move much.
