A proposal that would see twin cities at Whangarei and Marsden Pt/Ruakaka has been rejected in 80 per cent of submissions on possible options for a growth strategy for the district for the next 30-50 years.

Nearly all submissions wanted Whangarei to retain and develop its status as the main urban, commercial and business centre for the region, with a strong, protected and "enduring" CBD.

Overwhelmingly, Whangarei has rejected the lightly regulated approach to land development of the past 20 years which, if continued, would allow development of twin cities and ribbon development along the coast.

Protection of Whangarei Harbour was the single most important issue for those who spoke up, mentioned in one-third of submissions. The issue was also raised at all seven hui held to discuss the strategy. A number of focus groups also "fed into" the data-gathering process.
