Verse of The Day
(Luke 1:26-28)

Flood-prone homes in Kaeo may be relocated after the Northland Regional Council indicated it is looking at a proposal to buy land close to the small town.

About four hectares of land, immediately adjacent to the town and up the Waikara Stream, is being offered by farmer Phil Green as an alternative site for affected homeowners.

However, a four-way funding proposal means affected homeowners will need to contribute a combined $500,000 towards relocation costs.

The Government allocated $500,000 two days before the general election last year, after initially knocking back an $800,000 request.

The Far North District Council and the NRC will contribute $500,000 each.

The land being looked at does pond and will need to be raised to a safe level above the flood plain.

State Highway 10 may also need to be raised.

The regional council intends to use gravel dredged from Kaeo River to fill and raise the site.
