Te Uri o Hau Settlement Trust is considering legal action to recover funds from its chairman, Russell Kemp, and deputy chairman Sir Graham Latimer.

Letters have been sent to the pair seeking explanations for the total of $384,576 which Sir Graham collected in trustee, director and consultant payments in the year to March 31, 2008, and $344,576 which Mr Kemp received in similar fees.

The monies received by Sir Graham and Mr Kemp included $281,242 each got for consultancy services for Te Arai Coastal Lands, to which Renaissance sold 616ha of forest land at Mangawhai in 2006 for $21.8 million.

The two men have been stood down from office while the trust's audit sub-committee investigates their activities.

Beneficiaries of the Northland hapu learned about the inquiry into payments to the trust's top two officials at a meeting in Maungaturoto on Saturday where it was disclosed the Renaissance Group - which manages assets from Te Uri o Hau's $15.6 million Treaty settlement - is insolvent.
