Northland Regional and District councils and the Northland District Health Board are developing a new system to avoid "dropping the ball" on water quality warnings.

Last week, the Far North and Whangarei District councils failed to act on Northland District Council's water-testing results that showed nine coastal bathing spots were unsafe to swim in because of high levels of the indicator bacteria, enterococci.

This outraged beach-goers who had continued to swim, none the wiser.

Of Whangarei's six unsafe swimming areas on the Tutukaka Coast, two still showed contamination this week - Pacific and Kowharewa bays.

The new protocol meant that the district councils would be responsible for putting up warning signs as soon as the NRC advised them of any unsafe swimming areas - which the NDHB's medical officer of health, Loek Hanneveld, last week said was already the protocol.

But confusion over who was to act meant no one did.
