At least one person is believed dead after a car left the road and plunged into a river north of Whangarei.

A towtruck had been sent, but a crane was needed to remove the vehicle from the river where it was submerged about 7m deep.

One, and possibly two, people were believed to be trapped in the vehicle.

The accident happened at the intersection of Ngunguru and Kaiatea roads

The accident happened at the intersection of Ngunguru and Kaiatea roads about 16km northeast of Whangarei, between 5.30-6pm, police said.
