PROGRESS: The last of the houses are being built as part of Landco stage two of the development. College Rd runs behind.

The engine starts and the mover’s truck pulls away from the kerb, driving past manicured lawns and purple flowers.

Another family has arrived.

In this new "urban village" the houses stand shoulder to shoulder, greeting visitors with modern exteriors all similar to the next.

Suburbia. In the heart of Auckland.

It’s been two years since work began to transform 110 hectares of a disused quarry in Mt Wellington into Stonefields – a new community to house 6500 people.

When the East & Bays Courier photographed the progress in October 2007, the first house by Fletcher Living was under construction on what was stage one of the plan.

Now, Landco stage two of five is complete and a mix of terraces and villas sit on streets with names that reflect the history of the area – Stonemason Ave, Flint Way and Magma Cres.
