Coastal real estate agents are optimistic local holiday homes can be sold, despite the deepening recession and falling house prices.

New Zealand-wide, an avalanche of holiday homes have been listed since Christmas day as owners bail out of their properties, according to the Sunday Star Times.

The areas most affected are the millionaire playgrounds of Coromandel and Waiheke Island, where Aucklanders have bought expensive holiday homes.

In Whangarei, bach and holiday home listings increased 33 percent on TradeMe Property from December 2007 to December 2008.

But coastal real estate agents say buyers – who come from Northland, Auckland and overseas – are still looking to buy holiday homes.

We have an area where people haven’t really speculated much.

Peter Vink from Allens Ngunguru sells property from Pataua to Mimiwhangata, including the Tutukaka Coast.

While he does have more listings, he says it is normal for spring and summer.
