Every time the coastguard is called, they have to be prepared for the worst.

So when Robbie Nimmo, Tutukaka Coastguard's Volunteer of the Year, got a call on Tuesday saying that a boat was on fire, he didn't know what to expect.

The response crew couldn't find the boat, after extensive searching - "we suspect it might have been a passing ship" - but knew full well the result could have been a tragedy.

It's this adrenalin that drives people like Mr Nimmo to volunteer for their local coastguard, a position which also requires huge commitment.

He can't pinpoint a moment where he's felt scared on a job, but said he's been out in all weather conditions, in the dark in stormy seas, and helped with harrowing jobs such as helicopter winch rescues.
