“U tonu hoki toku whakaaro, e kore te mate, te ora ranei, e kore nga anahera, nga rangatiratanga ranei, e kore nga mea onaianei, e kore nga mea e puta mai a mua, e kore nga mana, E kore te tiketike, e kore te hohonu, e kore tetahi atu mea hanga, e kaha ki te momotu i a tatou i te aroha o te Atua, i tera i roto nei i a Karaiti Ihu, i to tatou Ariki.” (Romans 8:38-39)

A free one-day workshop

You are cordially invited to attend this one-day workshop to be held in Auckland on 19 February 2009 aimed at improving community group understanding of resource management practice. The workshop, to be hosted by the Environmental Defence Society, targets environmental non-government organisations, community and ratepayer groups, iwi authorities and concerned individuals. Some travel assistance is available for out-of-towners.

Date: Thursday 19 February 2009
Place: Crowne Plaza Hotel, 128 Albert Street, Auckland
Time: 8.45am - 5.15pm

Programme Highlights

We have invited the Minister for the Environment, Hon Dr Nick Smith, to open the workshop and explain his anticipated changes to the Resource Management Act (to be confirmed).

The balance of the programme will be in 3 main parts.

First, we explain how to set up and manage an NGO. This will be followed by a presentation from the Ombudsman's Office on how to access official information and a speaker from the Ministry for the Environment on the support it can offer community groups.

The second part will focus on RMA procedural issues, including how to best utilise the various procedures available under the RMA and how to present an effective case to councils and the Environment Court. Specialist council planning commissioners, expert witnesses and lawyers will talk about best practice in presenting a case. An Environment Court Judge and a Commissioner will talk about appearances before the Court and about mediation.

The third part of the workshop will focus on actual cases involving water management, landscape protection and coastal subdivision. At this stage the workshop attendees will be divided into concurrent sessions dependent on their specific interests.

There will also be an opportunity for local issues to be raised and for advice to be sought from the specialist presenters.
