Population projected at 40,000

Bream Bay could have a city of nearly 40,000 in 50 years' time with Whangarei District Council rezoning more land in the area for business purposes to help meet future demand.

The council has agreed to a private plan change application from developer WFH Properties to rezone 1.5ha of land at One Tree Point from Living 1 to Business 3. This has increased the existing Business 3 area of 1.52ha to about 3ha.

The plan change was recommended by the council's hearings commissioners, made up of David Hill, Robert Chan and Councillor Merv Williams.

the district council will next month finalise its Bream Bay Structure Plan, designed to make an easier and more structured development.

The commissioners said the proposed plan change represented a minor expansion to an existing Business 3 environment in the area and allowed for appropriate rezoning of land in accordance with approved subdivision and roading layout.
