The prospect of a luxury property on Roberton Is in the Bay of Islands being returned to public ownership is looking unlikely..

Known as Snapper Rock, the 2.6ha property is up for mortgagee sale and is one of five properties on a cross-lease on the western part of the island, also known as Motuarohia.

The Eastern Bay of Islands Preservation Society, Bay of Islands Maritime Park Inc and Bay of Islands Coastal Watchdog are urging the Department of Conservation to buy Snapper Rock and up to five other properties.

...if both funding options fell through a case could be taken to Cabinet by Conservation Minister Steve Chadwick.

DOC Bay of Islands area manager Rolien Elliot said people were keen to see private land on the islands brought back into public ownership and DOC was applying for funding under the Nature Heritage Fund.
