There's trouble brewing in paradise with a Whangarei coastal group and a Maori trust suing the Government over a $10 million slice of beachfront land at Matapouri.

Friends of Matapouri and Te Whanau o Rangiwhakaahu Hapu Charitable Trust have lodged High Court action against the Department of Conservation, Land Information New Zealand and Attorney General Michael Cullen.

The dispute centres on a prime 1.1ha slice of beachfront land at Matapouri - but the two groups don't want the land, they just want it returned to Crown ownership.

They say the land is worth about $10 million.

The two groups say the land, which includes two significant wahi tapu sites, was originally part of the Otito Reserve but was wrongly converted to private ownership through a surveying error.

They have now formed the Otito Campaign to push their case.
