The storm gave most of the country something to talk about, but the really nasty moments were reserved for just a few places, like Haumoana.

Beachside properties in the Hawke’s Bay were battered by four metre swells.

During high tide waves damaged at least four beachfront homes, and threatened to take part of others back out to sea.

One owner, who was too upset to speak to us, had only moved in last Friday.

And while the sight proved a magnet for visitors, the police and council quickly had to shut the area down.

“Just closing the road off at the moment just to stop people putting themselves in danger basically,’ says Gordon Foster of the Hastings District Council.
