A powerful storm is wreaking havoc in the most populated parts of New Zealand.

At the Pacific Rendezvous resort, 29km from Whangarei, manager Robert Nimmo said he tied down the roof of one luxury, $195 a night unit, after it lifted in winds gusting at 140km/h. At 5pm he said his barometer was "off the scale".

Ranchslider door frames had been blown in and spoutings and gutterings had been ripped off external walls. Power was still on early evening, but had been cut at nearby Tutukaka and Ngunguru townships, where surface flooding began at 9am.
