It's not a great surfing spot, but you may well have passed it on your way to Sandy Bay on the Tutukaka Coast. The local population has been fighting commercial development of the sandspit for decades. The latest owners -- Auckland-based property development company, LandCo -- was about to seek resource consent to create a township of 350 houses on the fragile sandspit when the housing downturn struck. LandCo has since put its plans on hold and resumed negotiation with DoC to sort out a land-swap. Most recently, LandCo's financial difficulties have been reported by National Business Review.
