The Department of Conservation is working closely with Ngunguru Sandspit owner Landco to try and come up with a fair and equitable land swap.

Landco has drawn strong opposition to its proposal for a 350-house subdivision on the spit across the water from Ngunguru.

The department wants the ecologically sensitive area protected and believes a swap for other DOC land is the best way to do this.

Land all around the country, including pieces in Auckland, are being considered

Northland conservator Chris Jenkins says a lot of energy and effort is going into trying to identify a piece of land that can be exchanged.
