It’s the trees, rivers and streams of the natural environment that make Kerikeri unique, according to Vision Kerikeri chairman Rod Brown.

But we are losing our trees and our rivers and streams are neglected, he says.

Speaking at the body’s annual general meeting last week, Mr Brown warned that the ambience, started by George Alderton and early pioneers from China by tree planting in a barren, undulating and windswept landscape, now seems threatened and needs public attention.

Vision Kerikeri, which seeks to educate and encourage thinking about a vision for our future, has been campaigning since 2004.

"Today we seem poorly prepared to manage this visual, historic and cultural heritage. The permissive basis of the district plan has been exposed as growth-driven largely by ad hoc initiatives by developers. The effects on Kerikeri Rd are obvious but with weak rules the effects, cannot be controlled," he says.
