The Conservation Minister has asked Department of Conservation staff to talk again to the developer Landco about a possible deal for the Ngunguru sandspit.

Landco is proposing a major subdivision and has turned down the department's previous offers of a land swap.

The minister, Steve Chadwick met the head of Landco, Greg Olliver, along with local people who want to save the spit, on her first trip to Northland as Conservation Minister.

She says the land is too fragile and precious for development and a way must be found to save it.

Ms Chadwick has asked the Northland conservator to reopen discussions with Landco on the options.
