Whangarei residents are being warned to prepare for natural hazards, despite having a low risk of being hit by a tsunami [Presumably because most of Whangarei City is built on relatively high ground -Ed.].

Two reports released recently by the Government show the risk of a tsunami hitting Whangarei is relatively low compared to other parts of the country.

A 4.5-metre tsunami surge, which could cause hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage, is likely to happen only once every 500 years.
