Verse of The Day
“Ka mea a Ihu ki a ia, Kia whakapaua tou ngakau, tou wairua, tou hinengaro, ki te aroha ki te Ariki, ki tou Atua. Ko te tuatahi tenei, ko te kupu nui. He rite ano te tuarua ki tenei, Kia aroha koe ki tou hoa tata, ano ko koe.” (Matthew 22:37-39)

Proponents of a large dam in the Waihopai Valley say it will be built to the highest possible standards, but opponents argue a breach would be catastrophic.

A five-day hearing before commissioner John Maassen held in Blenheim last week was adjourned with Mr Maassen requiring more information before making his decision on the resource consent.

The effects of the dam on neighbouring properties and the region, and the "what if" scenario, were some of the issues discussed to try to determine whether it should go ahead.

The proposed dam would store up to 18 million tonnes of water in a reservoir covering 160ha. The dam wall would be 1.5km long and 20m high, rising to 35m at its highest point.

There were 29 submissions on the dam from a variety of people including nearby land owners, wineries and iwi.

Wine Growers of Ara is a fully independent subsidiary of Landco and has about 330ha of grapes in Marlborough. Landco also owns the Waihopai Valley's Bankhouse Station, which is about 1500ha, and about 30,000ha of high country farmland in the South Island. It also owns residential property in Auckland.
