BIRTHDAY celebrations for a Northland man turned to terror when he was stabbed about 15 times in the chest and left fighting for his life in intensive care.

The man, who had just turned 33, remained in a serious but stable condition in Whangarei Hospital's intensive care unit today after surgery.

The attack has stunned the boating community at Tutukaka, and police are calling for witnesses to come forward with information to help them with their investigation.

Police carried out a detailed search of the scene after the stabbing was reported about 10.30pm on Thursday night.

An arrest was made at Tutukaka a short time later.
