Residents opposed to controversial erosion-control work at Matapouri beach feel their concerns have been proven valid after high tides brought down part of a newly established dune.

The tides also felled a fence erected by the Whangarei District Council to stop people walking on the sand dunes where native grasses have been planted.

Despite the setback, the council is optimistic about the project, in which sand extracted from the estuary was used to form dunes at the top of the beach. However, those opposed have again called for the dunes to be left alone.
