The Minister of Conservation has poured cold water on a proposed land swap deal between DoC and the owners of the Ngunguru sandspit. The option was first proposed by the local ratepayers association some two years ago.

The Minister’s response is disappointing and a large-scale cop-out. It continues the sad history of short-sightedness by central and local government, but having said that, the approach taken by the local action group may not have helped their cause.

In his response, the Minister Chris Carter said the Bream Bay land was also of ecological significance and suggested the Whangarei District Council use whatever devices are available to it in the Resource Management Act.

Those are just political weasel words and I am amazed a spokesperson from the Save the Sandspit action group welcomed the remarks - apparently because the Minister was generous enough to acknowledge the high ecological value of the sandspit!
