People trying to save a Northland sandspit from development are staging a public walk on the spit on Sunday to raise money for their legal campaign.

Developer Landco is proposing a 350-house subdivision on the Ngunguru Sandspit, near Whangarei.

The Ngunguru Sandspit Protection Society says Sunday's sponsored walk will boost awareness of the spit's value as the last coastal wilderness of its kind in the country, and also raise funds for the legal fight.

It says local boaties will ferry people across to the spit from 11am.
