A group of ratepayer associations has called for the Whangarei District Council to suspend a project that plans to protect the district's notable landscapes.

The WDC has released its 'Whangarei Landscape Review Project - Issues and Options Consultation' and has held public meetings in the last week to discuss the review.

The review identifies important landscapes within the district and looks at threats and opportunities for these areas and strategies for their management and protection.

Strategies include proposals for development restrictions and some landowners fear that their property rights will be eroded under the review.
