Ngunguru residents fighting to stop development on their sandspit welcome a plan to swap Department of Conservation land for the iconic site, but want to see some action.

National Party Enivironment spokesman Nick Smith outlined his party’s plans for the environment to about 60 Tutukaka coast residents at Ngunguru Sports Complex on Monday.

Mr Smith said if he was Environment Minister after the next election he would push for DOC land “with little conservation value” to be swapped for the l2lha Ngunguru Sandspit, saving it from development.

Sandspit owner Landco plans to cover 36ha of the sandspit with up to 350 sections and have another 85ha in reserve, possibly under the control of the Queen Elizabeth II Trust. But the plan has stirred a storm, with upset residents setting up the Ngunguru Sandspit Protection Society to fight any development.
