Verse of The Day
(Philippians 2:14-16)

Human Interest - Local
Written by Alexa Whinnen

My childhood years were spent in a small seaside township called Ngunguru, on the north east coast of New Zealand. [Alexa is the daughter of Stuart and Elizabeth Mitchell] It was a very picturesque spot, and lent itself to plenty of outdoor activity. While spending hours exploring the water, beaches and surrounding hillsides, I also began (from age 7) learning the piano. Lessons were challenging (for the teacher…or perhaps both of us), because I was far more inclined to play by ear than read or practice prescribed pieces.

While music and outdoor activity were central to childhood, the career path I followed was firstly nursing (specializing in mental health), followed by counselling, and psychotherapy training. In private practice, I continue to find it very rewarding working alongside people, to find a pathway towards healing and redefining their lives.

Solitude, outdoor activity and music, have remained essential sources of nourishment for me. Gradually these strands have woven together, in writing music about our beautiful landscape, and about the myriad emotions we experience on our journey through life.
