Whangarei District Council and Marsden Cove Ltd have established Marsden Bay beach with sands from harbour dredgings and now is the rewarding time of enhancing those beaches with plants.

The rock training wall developed by WDC has provided a safe refuge from surrounding developments and increased bird life in the area. The beach planting is aimed at stabilizing the sand and also enhancing habitat and food sources for those birds.

Whangarei District Council has had over 10,000 Spinifex and Muhlenbekia plants eco-sourced and grown for this area.

Dune plants such as Spinifex will act to hold sand in place, which will improve the texture and colour of the sand and encourage natural dune processes over time. With good results from planting there is likely to be less reliance on “topping up” from harbour dredging.

Professional planting contractors will also be on site to lay out the plants and give advice to groups on how to plant spinifex.
