Young people terrorising Tutukaka residents and leaving trails of vandalism could soon be a thing of the past.

It is hoped a new community patrol group will scare off and discourage vandals.

The Tutukaka Coast Ratepayers and Residents Association is calling for men who are interested in being part of a community watch group.

Committee member Susy Bretherton says the whole coastline is affected by vandalism, mostly by groups of youths. Many of the offenders take advantage of the area's isolation, she says.

"Sometimes it's really scary when all these people are drunk and stoned, and we're 20 to 25 minutes from the police to come out if they're not busy," Miss Bretherton says.
