Residents in the Northland town of Ngunguru who are trying to save their local sandspit from development say the Environmental Defence Society has boosted their hopes of success.

There is wide opposition in Northland to the property developer Landco's plan to build 350 houses on the untouched Ngunguru spit.

Rick Bazeley, from the Ngunguru Sandspit Protection Society, says EDS lawyers and other experts who ran a seminar for locals recently have agreed to help them fight their case.

Mr Bazeley says the Society now has members from around New Zealand who want the Ngunguru spit left in its natural state.

Landco has yet to lodge its development application with the Whangarei District Council.
