The latest United Nations climate change report vindicates resistance to developing Ngunguru Sandspit, say opponents of the plan.

Development company Landco, which owns the iconic sandspit and neighbouring Whakairiora block, has plans for up to 350 sections covering 36ha of the sandspit.

Another 85ha would be a reserve, possibly under the control of the Queen Elizabeth II Trust.

The plan has drawn much opposition, with the Ngunguru Coast Action Group opposing the development, saying the sandspit is a recognised coastal hazard area and any development would be at risk from being deluged by the tide.
