It took three proposals for Charles Leeper to convince Daphne to marry him, but when she agreed they became inseparable.

Three must be the couple's lucky number as they celebrate three milestones this week.

Their 60th wedding anniversary falls on Thursday - Daphne's 85th birthday. Charles, known as Charlie, turns 84 the following day.

Daphne, nee Chapman, says she was a difficult woman to please and Charlie was her third engagement.

Daphne says they love living in Ngunguru where the neighbours all look after each other. "Where else can you go fishing or swimming in the middle of winter?" she says.

They met during World War Two while cleaning and repairing guns on British Navy ships. It wasn't love at first sight and they worked together for several years before getting engaged.

Ballroom dancing sparked the romance, with Charlie teaching Daphne to dance.
