People power is being credited for a decision to can controversial plans to fire up Marsden B Power Station at Ruakaka using coal.

State-owned company Mighty River Power announced yesterday it would not proceed with seeking consents to recommission the mothballed power station.

The Marsden B consent application drew a record 4000-plus public submissions - almost 95 percent opposed. After consents were granted by the Whangarei District and Northland Regional councils six appeals - by Greenpeace, the Bream Bay Action Group, Ruakaka residents J. and R. Keith, Urquharts Bay Residents Association and Wiri Oil Services - were filed with the Environment Court.
