The controversy surrounding the Whangarei District Council's landscape review continues, despite the council telling landowners not to worry.

The council started a review of its landscape protection last year, under order from the Environment Court.

But many thousands of landowners said they were concerned they would suffer heavy restrictions on their land.

In December, the council abandoned the idea of mapping areas of important landscapes.

Instead it has suggested a performance standard that will make anyone applying for resource consent for a discretionary or non-complying activity confirm they will protect landscape values.

The council is taking a much more straightforward approach, says its environmental services manager Ian McAlley.

"In short, the 4700 people who felt they were about to suffer heavy restrictions on their land use don't need to worry," he says.

However, one farmer representative believes the rule could be more onerous on landowners.
