Verse of The Day
“Ka mea a Ihu ki a ia, Kia whakapaua tou ngakau, tou wairua, tou hinengaro, ki te aroha ki te Ariki, ki tou Atua. Ko te tuatahi tenei, ko te kupu nui. He rite ano te tuarua ki tenei, Kia aroha koe ki tou hoa tata, ano ko koe.” (Matthew 22:37-39)

Matapouri Bay is just one of a string of idyllic beaches on the Tutukaka Coast.

There's a song that goes: "I've been everywhere man, I've been everywhere." And in Northland, at least, I thought I had. I'd eaten fish and chips at Mangonui, swum with jellyfish at Matai Bay, taken the Rawene car ferry across the Hokianga, and met with the spirits at Cape Reinga.

But somehow I managed to miss the Tutukaka Coast, which, if you're coming from Auckland, is one of the easiest and quickest areas to get to in the winterless north.

The great thing about this tranquil coast is that it's still reasonably secluded, especially in winter. While it might be a bit too nippy for a swim even in spring, there's nothing better than wrapping up warm and strolling along deserted beaches.

Tutukaka is a gentle, 30-minute drive east of Whangarei. Here you'll find Tutukaka marina, the launching pad for divers to the Poor Knights, and further up the road, just past Matapouri, is gorgeous Whale Bay. It's an ideal weekend getaway from Auckland.
