Other Coastlines - Marine Farms
Written by Whangarei Leader

A plan that could 'open all of Northland's coastline to marine farms' is being opposed by a new incorporated society.

The Northland Regional Council is currently consulting on its change to the Regional Coastal Plan - proposed plan change four.

The plan proposes inviting would-be marine farmers to initiate a zone-change for aquaculture areas, leaving them with the cost.

But that could make it possible for large-scale oyster farms to be set up in the Whangarei Harbour, according to Whangarei Harbour Watchdog Inc.

The incorporated society has been set up to further the work of the Whangarei Harbour Aquaculture Action Group, says chairwoman Jane Kippenberger.

The society's first challenge will be to oppose the council's plan change.

During initial aquaculture consultation, a 540-hectare marine farming site was proposed for the Whangarei Harbour.

But after a public outcry, the council withdrew its support for the site.

Ms Kippenberger says the society would like this stance to continue, with Whangarei Harbour being excluded from commercial marine farms.
