Ritchie Rd residents were celebrating yesterday after subdivision plans that included taking away part of their beach were rejected.

Plans for the 20-lot subdivision at Parua Bay have been turned down because of the effects it would have on the environment.

The important thing here is that they felt the changes would destroy the natural character of the area, and that's what we said all along.

A and T Properties Limited sought consent from the Northland Regional Council to reclaim a 119-metre long, five-metre wide area of beach at Ritchie Rd to provide an eight-metre wide road required by the Whangarei District Councils roading division for a 20-lot subdivision.

However, the regional council has declined the application and is recommending the Conservation Minister do the same.
