Other Coastlines - Pohutukawa

Whangarei's coastline is a brilliant red this time of year, thanks in part to Project Crimson.

Project Crimson is a charitable conservation trust which, since 1990, has been protecting and planting pohutukawa and rata trees.

Thousands of trees have been planted in Whangarei thanks to the project, says Whangarei Conservation Department spokeswoman Lynnie Gibson. "It's been hugely successful," she says.

Pohutukawa were in danger from possums and development.

"There was an era where there was a huge loss of pohutukawa, that was the drive initially - to bring back pohutukawa to the coastline," she says.

"We're seeing the results now."
