Whangarei's outstanding and iconic landscapes and natural character areas are one step closer to protection.

Whangarei District Council members agreed on a way forward for the controversial landscape review at the December meeting of the environmental services committee after a number of workshops were held on the issue.

The landscape review came about from an Environment Court ruling, which meant the council had to review its 1995 landscape assessment.

Landscapes needing protection will be divided into three categories, iconic landscapes, outstanding landscapes and natural character areas.

It has been recommended that all coastal countryside areas are identified as a natural character area and a small group of councillors and council staff will work together to determine the exact boundaries of these areas.

For other areas, the amenity values of landscapes will be assessed for noncomplying or discretionary resource consent applications.
