The Ngunguru sandspit owner must follow guidelines on the upkeep of the area now that it has been declared an iconic landscape.

The council plans to seek changes to the Local Government Act so that any developments in areas identified as either iconic or outstanding reserve will have to ensure the amenities are not spoilt.

It is the only landscape exclusively privately owned that has been declared a natural reserve, alongside Mt Manaia, Bream Head, Mt Aubrey, the offshore islands, Waro limestone cast, Hikurangi cone, Ngararatunua volcanic cone, Hurupaki scoria cone, Maruata, Whatitiri, Maungatapere and Maungakaramea volcanic cones and Otaikarangi wetland.

Whangarei District Councillor and environmental services committee member Sheryl Mai said the owners of private land identified as natural reserves were expected to follow council guidelines on the care of such places.
