A Northland MP has joined a campaign against development of the Ngunguru sandspit.

The owner of the spit, Landco, wants to build 350 houses on its southern half and turn the northern half into a public reserve.

But New Zealand First MP, Brian Donnelly, who has a house in Ngunguru, has told residents the entire untouched peninsula should be protected.

Mr Donnelly says he will seek a meeting with the Conservation Minister to discuss either a land swap or the funds to buy the spit.

Quotable Value has valued the Ngunguru spit at $3-point-6 million but real estate sources say it could fetch more than $20 million if it was cut into lifestyle blocks.
