Many people attending a three-day Landco "drop-in" to view controversial development plans for the Ngunguru sandspit are claimed to have ended up joining a group opposing the company proposals.

Landco official George Hulbert said yesterday the company had recorded about 60 people attending the "drop-in" at the Ngunguru Memorial Hall on Thursday, and around 100 daily on Friday and Saturday.

Landco had declined the request to hold a meeting in the hall "because we wanted to consult with individuals, not attend a rally".

And Ngunguru Coast Action Group member Judy Gilbert said her group demonstrating their opposition to the company plans outside the hall had signed up 35 new supporters for the anti-development Friends and Guardians of Ngunguru Sandspit on Thursday, 78 on Friday and more than 80 on Saturday.

Both Mr Hulbert and Mrs Gilbert said the three-day confrontation over Landco plans for a 350-section village on the sandspit had been peaceful but they had plenty of other points of disagreement.
