Put up or shut up: Landco has urged the Department of Conservation to talk to it about a potential land swap for the Ngunguru Sandspit.

Last week DOC Northland Conservator Chris Jenkins said the sandspit was an important biological and cultural site and the department was keen to protect it.

...they should get on with identifying them to us, instead of playing with the emotions of local Ngunguru people...

Mr Jenkins said initial talks had been held with the sandspit's owner, Landco, about the possibility of a land swap, with other DOC land possibly given to the company in exchange for the 151ha sandspit.

But Landco communications manager George Hulbert said he was surprised at this as the company had had no discussion with DOC over the possibility of a swap.
